Common problem

Air Conditioner Leaking Water in Elizabeth South

Water where water should never be: dripping off the indoor unit, staining the ceiling or pooling on the floor. Elizabeth South Air Conditioning traces and fixes leaking air conditioners across Elizabeth South every summer, and most leaks come down to one of a handful of causes.

What Makes an Aircon Leak Water

A refrigerated unit pulls moisture out of the air as it cools. That water is supposed to run down a condensate drain and out of the house. When something blocks that path, the water finds its own way out instead.

The causes, cheapest first:

Blocked condensate line

Dust, sludge and sometimes insect nests stop the water flowing, and it backs up into the unit.

Dirty filter or coil

Restricted airflow freezes the coil, and the melt water overflows the tray.

Disconnected or crushed drain pipe

Common in older homes where pipework has been knocked over the years.

Failed condensate pump

Units that pump water uphill rely on a small pump, and pumps wear out.

Rusted or split drain tray

On older units the tray itself gives up.

Many of the Trust-era homes we work on, the late-1950s and 1960s brick builds around Goodman Road and Trimmer Road, still run original stormwater paths, so we check where the drain actually discharges before we blame the unit. Sometimes the blockage is in the house side, not the air conditioner.

Safe Aircon Checks Before You Call

A couple of things are safe to look at yourself, and they fix the simplest leaks on the spot:

Turn the unit off

At the wall or isolator, so it stops making water while you look.

Check the filter

If it is grey and matted, that alone can cause a frozen coil and overflow.

Look at the drain outlet

Outside, if you can see it, for obvious blockages or a pipe that has come loose.

Do not open the unit casing or run water through anything. Refrigerant and electrical parts are qualified work, and poking around a leaking unit usually makes the diagnosis harder, not easier.

Do not wait on this

When a Leaking Split System Needs a Technician

Call us the moment water touches anything it can damage. A drip onto a ceiling in a single-storey brick home might be a small job today and a plaster repair next week. Call straight away if you notice:

  • Water staining on a ceiling or running down an inside wall
  • A musty smell near the unit, which often means standing water in the drain
  • The unit tripping off or the breaker cutting out alongside the leak

Our Within-the-Hour Response covers urgent issues where availability allows, and we are on the Elizabeth South run most weeks, so a leak rarely waits long.

How We Fix a Leaking Air Conditioner

The fix depends on the cause, and we find the cause before we quote.

Flush the condensate drain

Clear and confirm water flows freely outside.

Clean the filter and coil

So the coil stops freezing and overflowing. If it has been years, a full air conditioning cleaning makes sense.

Reconnect or replace drain pipework

Sealed and graded properly this time.

Replace a failed pump or tray

Quoted before we start.

If the leak points to something bigger, like a frozen split system with a refrigerant problem or a ducted unit with error codes showing, we will tell you straight whether repair or replacement is the better spend.

Questions

Water Leaks and Air Conditioning FAQs

Is it normal for an air conditioner to drip water?

A little condensation from the indoor unit on a humid day is normal, but water pooling on the floor, staining the ceiling or running down a wall is a fault that needs a look.

Can I keep running the unit while it leaks?

Turn it off. Running a leaking unit can push water into the wall or ceiling, damage the electrical parts and turn a small fix into a bigger repair.

How fast can you get here for a water leak?

We run urgent air conditioning repairs across Elizabeth South most days, and our Within-the-Hour Response means urgent issues get a reply where availability allows, so call and we will book you in.

Will the quote cover everything before work starts?

Yes. We diagnose the cause on site, then give you a fixed quote under our Fixed Upfront Pricing before any work starts, so there are no hourly rates and no bill shock.
