Why Your Aircon Won't Start

Nine times out of ten a silent unit has a simple cause, and the cheapest one is usually the culprit. Here are the faults we find most often on no-start callouts, listed from cheapest first:

Power and isolation

Every system has an isolator switch near the outdoor unit, and in the older Trust-era streets off Willison Road we often find them painted over or hidden behind a shed. If someone switched it off, the whole unit goes dead.

Tripped safety switch

A compressor drawing too hard on a 40-degree day can trip a circuit breaker or safety switch, and the whole circuit drops with it. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us.

Thermostat and controller

Flat batteries in a wall controller look exactly like a dead system, and so does a mode set against the wrong season. We check the simple settings before we open anything up.

Failed capacitor

Capacitors give the compressor and fan their starting kick, and they fail more often than any other part, especially after a long, hot summer. It is a quick, inexpensive repair for a technician with parts on the van.

Control board faults

Modern units show fault codes on the controller or indoor unit when a board or sensor gives up. Note the code before you call, because it points us straight at the circuit involved.

How it works

Safe Checks Before You Call Anyone

Four checks cost you nothing and take a minute:

  1. Step 1: Step 1

Confirm the isolator switch near the outdoor unit is switched on.

  2. Step 2: Step 2

Look at your switchboard for a tripped breaker and reset it once.

  3. Step 3: Step 3

Put fresh batteries in the wall controller.

  4. Step 4: Step 4

Make sure the unit is set to cool, not heat or fan.

If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off. A repeated trip means an electrical fault that needs a licensed technician, not another reset.

When a No-Start Needs Air Conditioning Repairs

Some symptoms mean more than a flat battery. A burning smell, a breaker that trips every time, water around the unit or an error code that will not clear all point to electrical or refrigerant trouble.

These are not do-it-yourself jobs. Refrigerant handling is licensed work, and our ARC Licence L162586 covers it, so book air conditioning repairs and we will talk you through what to do while you wait.

How it works

How We Get Your Aircon Going Again

Whether your dead unit hangs on a brick wall or sits in a workshop south of Hogarth Road, the callout follows the same honest shape, and it does not change with the system type:

  1. Step 1: Diagnose on site

We test power, controls and components in order, cheapest cause first.

  2. Step 2: Quote before work

Fixed Upfront Pricing: a fixed quote before any work starts. No hourly rates, no bill shock.

  3. Step 3: Repair same visit

Common parts like capacitors and controllers ride on the van, so most units run again the same day.

  4. Step 4: Covered for workmanship

If a fault occurs due to workmanship, the team returns and fixes it at no cost under our Lifetime Labour Warranty.

If the diagnosis comes back grim and the unit is well past saving, we will say so plainly and quote a replacement instead of selling you a repair that buys six months.

Questions

Air Conditioner Not Turning On FAQs

Why won't my air conditioner turn on at all?

Most dead units come down to power: a tripped breaker, an isolated switch turned off, flat controller batteries or a failed capacitor. We test each in order and fix the actual cause.

Is a dead aircon an emergency?

Yes. We hold 24/7 emergency availability, so if a system dies during a heatwave or your ducted gas heating fails mid-winter, call and you get a Within-the-Hour Response where availability allows.

How much does it cost to fix a unit that won't start?

You get Fixed Upfront Pricing: a fixed quote before any work starts, with no hourly rates and no bill shock. Most no-start faults are small, and many are sorted in a single visit.

Should I repair or replace an older unit?

Sometimes. If the unit is well past its service life and the repair is costly, we will say so and quote a replacement instead. You decide with the numbers in front of you.
